A werewolf, also known as a lycanthrope (from the Greek λυκάνθρωπος: λύκος, lukos, "wolf", and άνθρωπος, anthrōpos, man), is a mythological or folkloric human with the ability to shapeshift into a wolf or an anthropomorphic wolf-like creature, either purposely or after being placed under a curse. This transformation is often associated with the appearance of the full moon, as popularly noted by the medieval chronicler Gervase of Tilbury, and perhaps in earlier times among the ancient Greeks through the writings of Petronius.

Werewolves are often attributed superhuman strength and senses, far beyond those of both wolves and men. The werewolf is generally held as a European character, although its lore spread through the world in later times. Shape-shifters, similar to werewolves, are common in tales from all over the world, most notably amongst the Native Americans, though most of them involve animal forms other than wolves.

Werewolves are a race of supernatural creatures that were once human, but now have the power to transform into a wolf whenever there is a full moon, that have encountered by hunters such as Sam and Dean Winchester. It has been stated that werewolves and skinwalkers are cousins, and that there is no known cure for a werewolf to turn back human.

They have seen only once as 'monsters of the week' in the series, being their appearance in Heart, and they have been mentioned four times in other episodes.

Werewolves, also known as lycanthrope, are a supernatural species in The Vampire Diaries. Werewolves were hinted at in the last episode of the first season (although mild suggestions had occasionally been made prior to this) and until that moment their existence was very rocky. They were first seen in the episode Bad Moon Rising, where Mason Lockwood transformed into a werewolf as on that night it was a full moon.

The Shape-shifters, also called werewolves, are descended from the ancient Spirit Warriors of the Quileute tribe. Back then, warriors and chiefs could leave their bodies and wander as spirits, blow fierce winds, communicate with animals, and hear each other's thoughts.
